You're going at it bass-ackwards.
Pick a box, any box, as your mail host. get your mail to the local
spool[s] there. SSH + favorite client. No muss, no fuss, no bother.
I travel a lot. I hate managing multiple spools, so I don't. My home
server runs 24/7, my firewall has a provision for gettig me in, and I
read mail by SSH into home & Pine. This also neatly solves the problem
af managing/archiving mail *sent*.
