considering the following information maybe its not as bad as you think.

so lets see.. mathematica runs on linux and has for a really long time, 
probably longer than you knew about mathematica or linux.. I will say that the
front end isn't as nice as the windows version, but I really like the mac os x
version better than all the others..  the linux one isn't unusuable its just
a little ugly cause they use motif, I believe.. and its a little slow at
rendering some of the graphics, but its still very good... a lot of people who
use mathematica daily run it on linux, so that should give you some idea

photoshop.. well you probably don't need more than the gimp offers right?
msft maps and streets I've never used.. but I get by with map quest.

umm there are add on apps for palms you can download for free that let you
write anywhere...

just in case you didn't know.
