I took the class last spring.  It will not be offered again by the
previous professor, Dr. Yongguang Zhang (ygz@cs), as he is a visiting
professor and will end his two year stay in December.  It is unlikely to
be offered by another professor, as there are few with the necessary
background.

I am not a real kernel hacker by any stretch of the imagination, but if
you have specific questions to help you get started, feel free to mail
me.  My main suggestion is to use User Mode Linux, as it will reduce
your frustration substantially.
