is it an optical mouse? who makes it? usb or ps/2?

in /etc/X11/XF86Config, search for a few lines resembling the following:

        Identifier "Something describing a mouse"
        Driver "mouse"
        Option "Protocol" ???
        Option "Device" "/dev/something"

what is the protocol string (the ???). if its an optical mouse, and ???
is "PS/2", try changing it to "IMPS/2" and restarting X

ive had this problem before and i think this is how i fixed it
