Just forward your SSH port, and use ssh -X.  That sets the display 
variable for you.  This is assuming you want to use X apps from another 
location on your home computer.  There's not much reason to use 
anything other than SSH.  If you don't want to use SSH, just search 
groups.google.com for export DISPLAY.
