Greetings!

The Central Texas Chapter of the IEEE Communications/Signal Processing
Society invites you to attend our September meeting and a presentation
by Thomas A. Strasser of Photuris.

DATE September 18, 2003 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

LOCATION SBC Laboratories, Inc. (SBC Labs)
           9505 Arboretum Blvd, Austin, Texas

TOPIC Evolution of Metropolitan Optical Networks

SPEAKER Thomas A. Strasser
           Chief Technologist
           Photuris, Inc.

Thomas A. Strasser is the Chief Technologist at next generation networking
startup Photuris, Inc., where he defines the optical architecture of a
transport product which integrates electrical and optical switching with
native support for virtually any mixture of TDM or data services. He
received his Ph.D. from Cornell University designing periodic guided-wave
devices, and worked for seven years at Bell Laboratories, where his group
invented and developed manufacturing for enabling technologies in the next
generation transmission platforms of AT&T and Lucent Technologies. Dr.
Strasser?s will serve as the technical program co-chair for Optical Fiber
Communications 2004 conference in Los Angeles, and has contributed 37
patents and over 100 presentations and publications in the field of optics
and communication devices.

ABSTRACT

Tom will discuss the technology and market forces guiding the evolution of
today?s metropolitan optical networks. The technology focus will describe
the key next generation technologies enabling automation of the Dense
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical layer, and how these have
been integrated with existing SONET Add/Drop Multiplexers (ADM) to provide a
single transport platform capable of carrying virtually any service without
the need to manage a network with individual ?boxes? for every protocol or
service type. The market forces section will describe the traffic trends in
the Metropolitan network and how the existing carrier networks influence the
network evolution.
