does ssh -v tell you anything about being (un)able to do X11
forwarding?  are you running from an xterm rather than 'terminal'
on the macos X machine  (i'd heard that mattered at some point)?

i've certainly seen it work before from an osx laptop to the cs
machines, but i've also seen it fail from a 10.2 laptop apparently
due to using the Terminal app.
