hi ya'll,

i've been having some troubles with my computer. I think it's mostly
a software issue and i would love to get it taken care of becuase it's
keeping me from using linux, which is annoying to say the least.

I'm running suse 9.1 and every so often, the computer [while reading
the harddrive] freezes. when i reboot, it's noticable slower. i can
still use it, but then the same error happens which forces me to
reboot which makes the computer slower. etc. to the point where i
could no longer use suse.

I've tried other distros including yoper, debian, and mandrake but i
could never get to the end of the install process. suse is the only
one that will let me complete the install. i did get one consitant
message among all of my various installs -- during the boot up [which
took forever and would never get to the actual install]. that message
was "hda: lost interrupt." does anyone know what this mean?

I googled and I couldn't find many solutions. Various people are
saying to put ide=dma_off in my boot. and others are saying to turn
off apic at boot. the problem is i am relatively knew to linux and i
don't know what adverse affects either will have on my system [i dont
want to create more problems in the process].

does anyone know how to turn these off at boot on suse and what these
do? also, any solutions to the problem? i am stuck using windows until
i can find a solution. :(
