The lack of git repos has also been discussed in the past in the context of 
OpenCore's OpenRISC project, as developers tend to agree with you there. I 
believe that, in the end, the members that remained chose Github for that 
particular project.

By the way, OpenCores' SVN repos were behind a registration wall the last time 
I looked (at least for a svn checkout). Many people (I for example) don't like 
that either.
