RaiMan proposed the following answer:
you have to copy the FOLDER xlrd contained in the downloaded stuff to
C:\Program Files\Sikuli X\Lib
so you get the following structure:
C:\Program Files\Sikuli X\Lib
-- xlrd
-- __init__.py
-- ... the other .py modules
this works for me.
