Hi all, So, this is going to be a fairly basic question, but please bear with me.
Some background: Our company (http://www.obsidian.com.au/) has been around about 8 years. We're currently employing about 12 staff, turning over a moderate but not spectacular amount. We've got a nice established set of customers and solid market here in AU, and are just starting an expansion to Europe. We've also got some really nice relationships with existing (very large) vendors of related equipment to our main software solution (ie. we do billing and quota management across voice and data, we have good relationships with key voice and data hardware vendors). Everything to date has been funded directly off the business we've bought in - no loans, no investment money. We're profitable, but not by a huge amount quite yet. The expansion to Europe is making it clear to us that there's some very large opportunities open to us, through our partners and also directly. However, to capitalise on those opportunities at the speed we'd like, some more cash would be ideal. So, for the first time, we're actually going out looking for investment money. Here's the question: While I know of VC's that like to invest in start-ups, do our fine list members here know of people that would be interested in a company our size/age? I've got a short-list of people I'm approaching in the first instance, but I'm keen to hear from people who may have recommendations for or against... Here's an additional question: I have an idea in my head of how much the company is worth (at least in my eyes). I likewise have a very clear idea of how much we need to really build strongly. However, I see stories of people getting funding rounds of multiple millions of dollars, and I wonder how some of these smaller companies are actually justifying the value, and whether perhaps we should try doing the same thing. That's a _very_ naive question, I'm sure, but I need to be asking it. So, the open question is, how would you go about valuing a company like ours?
