Unless there is enough cash on offer that after a year in this job you
don't have to work again, or if they want to let you go you get a
golden handshake large enough that people would have thought you
worked on the board of a large company beginning with the letter T,
then don't just walk away, run.

If this is how they treat you BEFORE you work for them, think about
how they will when you work for them.

What capability would you really have to COMPETE against them ?
nothing personal - probably none - ie. is a large customer going to
dump any software (or whatever) they have just spent the last year
internally justifying the $1M+ they have paid for it to date just
because you leave and join someone else. (I know sales guys can take
accounts, but only if they are selling the same products usually ie.
from one VAR to another VAR with the same product range, at best they
can sell OTHER products ie. say a reporting tool on top of an existing
ERP app say, or they can take support contracts etc).

So, given this logic - we can already deduce one thing - they are
probably clueless about a lot of things. Do you really want to work
for them ? (again see other comment if the job is going to pay you
enough to retire on after 1 year of employment)

At the end of the day - its your career, your life etc. Who are these
people really ?

Either way, 3 years is way too long.

As a side note - i know of one person that did sign a non-compete at
junior exec level that was at an industry level - it was for 12
months, but even then they had to pay him compensation (it was
actually 75% of his salary for a large number of months - 6 months i
believe), so that is something to think about.
