I think there's a lot more to this one.

Sun's presence in the mobile/embedded operating system market is/was
significant. The Android team certainly learnt from Sun's lessons to
come up with a better implementation. They didn't have Sun/Java's
(self-imposed) backwards compatibility constraints.

Microsoft similarly stepped all over Sun's Java patents when they
created .NET and the CLR. In some respects they also learned from Sun
to come up with a better implementation. In that case Sun chose not to
litigate but it's been alleged Sun used the threat of Java patent
infringements against Microsoft to counter-balance Microsoft's patent
threats against Sun/Oracle/MySql (sorry, I can't find the reference
from earlier this year).

It's a cold war of software patents.

Interesting that the same balance hasn't developed between Oracle and
Google yet.
