It's appropriate to discuss taxes. I don't think the level of taxation
in Australia is a real impediment to tech development.

No one can dispute that for the medium level taxes that we get
here the services are ok.

If there is a challenge wrt taxation, it would be Australian tech
firms leveraging offshore taxation systems to their advantage.

I'd like to see more of that..

For example, people in Germany (from what I am told - and part
of the story might have got lost in translation) is that Nokia did
a fantastic deal with the German Government to start producing
mobile phones there.

After taking the taxation benefits, they closed shop and moved
down the road and used the money to set up in Croatia or a
neighbour which was an even lower taxing/wages country.

Internationalising of tech is essential for survival. This means
that the 'dream' of producing all our own tech locally is going
to be unachievable. Simply because there are always lower
cost countries to get things made in.

Apple have a design in USA and make in China policy..

There's a few Aussies in Hong Kong and China.. but there's
room imho for more to get involved in banging out the tech.

For example, I doubt it would be too hard to set up a
"Samba" factory in Schenzen China.. making "official"
NAS devices.
