I just joined this group and I figured I'd better introduce myself.
I'm American, and when I moved from Boston to San Francisco six years
ago I expected to find better weather and nearly limitless job
opportunities in Silicon Valley. I DIDN'T expect to meet and fall in
love with an amazing Australian woman and find myself contemplating
relocating to Melbourne, but that's what happened.
I've spent the last ten years job-hopping, working for various
early-ish stage startups. These days I'm doing QA, build and test
automation, and tools development, mostly in Ruby. Living in San
Francisco is like being a kid in a candy store for anyone who likes
working at young tech companies, wearing a bunch of different hats and
learning a lot as you go. I've built up a great network over the years
and it has always provided "the next thing" for me when I was ready for
it. The idea of leaving all this behind and starting again anywhere
else seems crazy to me.
That said, I love Melbourne, I love my wife's family and her friends
there, and I've always enjoyed an adventure and a challenge. It's
likely to be a couple of years before we take the plunge, but I figured
I might as well start getting a feel for what my prospects there would
be like. I'd love to keep working for startups, rather than consign
myself to the beast of big-company bureaucracy. The ultimate situation
would be for me to land a job here with a company that has a Melbourne
office I could potentially transfer to later. Or land a job here with a
company where I could work remote from St. Kilda or something :)
Anyway, I'll be reading... if any of you are ever in San Francisco, by
all means drop a note and I'd be happy to meet up for a beer or
whatever.
