Hi Nathan, Yes interesting show.
Of course, we've all been promised that the tech sector in Australia will receive 'billions' in funding from the introduction of the Carbon Tax. It's called 'investment'. It's interesting when you go round and talk to Fund Managers. They are allowed to "accept" investments for green technologies, but by some strange trick of fate they are prohibited from making investments (I'm told) in any so called Blue Technologies developed here. When you look at the Governments Carbon-Tax ads, you see that the Solar Cells and Wind-Turbines are completely imported technologies. So when they mean 'investment', it's really just buying plant and equipment (importing) rather than understanding the technologies involved so that they can be sold at a profit later. The best way to see this clearly, is to visit Tokyo and compare Tokyo to Sydney with respect to these Blue Technologies. In Sydney, you will find research centres like for instance the ATP and others which are pretty much similar to what's in Japan. The Major difference is that in Japan, you can go to Showroooms in the city run by private companies such as Panasonic and many others where you can buy something of all the technology being developed. Here in Sydney, there's no equivalent showrooms because there has never been any push to get any technologies ready for sale on the shelf. In fact, actually selling what's being researched is totally frowned upon. The final, and most strange thing going on in Australia, is that private tech developers can tell you it's a pretty good place to get idea's started and a product through the early stages. Even companies like Toshiba from Japan and many others, use Australia as a test market and can judge how much effort to place on international sales by how well a product can sell in Australia. If it does well here, they pump in more money into marketing overseas, and they get predictable results. But, at the Government technology level, they work in reverse. They tend to pass low value on technology tested here. Their preference is that technologies, be they computer, Blue, Energy whatever, are all tested overseas before they can be purchased internally. It's really a lesson for what most of us already know. Just do whatever tech testing here, then move wherever else you need to move to take things to the next level. So when they talk big idea's, just realise that the millions and billions are talked about here, quickly run offshore and are spent in Tokyo and other places where they have been smart enough to set up retail showrooms for the technology they develop.
