So I instrumented my (PHP) code with some timers last night and I am showing a round trip time of 0.05s to 0.07s, inclusive of a few database reads, checking the database for uniqueness of the event, pushing it into SQS and reading it back out again. Not sure I agree with you that SQS is not meant to be quick :)
