Hi Michael, A lot depends on exactly what you are trying to do - but as some generic feedback, i'd recommend watching Seth Godin's talk on The Tribes We Lead ( http://www.ted.com/talks/seth_godin_on_the_tribes_we_lead.html ) - it speaks very insightfully about building a culture where people have a "cause" to believe in and fight for. This reduces/eliminates(?) your "mass marketing" needs. It genuinely only works if you are building a "cause" though (doesn't have to be non-profit, can be very much for profit, but needs to be a cause people are willing to believe in, fight for and contribute to).
The other way that comes to mind is partnerships - try to partner with people who already communicate with / transact with your desired client base. simran.
