is a reason why competition regulators split say rail companies into below 
and above tracks entities to deliberately limit the network effects. Below 
tracks have a natural geographical locus and lends itself squeezing out 
competition (as cities with sole airports find out) but monopoly leads to 
lack of competition and thus uptake of innovation which is why they want 
multiple services to run over the same common rail tracks.
