There are are limitations with lean startup approach but for many 
situations where you might have a market but not product or imperfect 
business model, it works because the stack depends on social capital (open 
source, freemium, community self-help) and not personal savings. The 
approach is less suited when need upfront development (eg MedTech) or the 
market has structural rigidities (eg banking compliance). As for Trump, 
arguably he is also doing a form of market probing using investors money 
(how many earlier ventures didn't pan out?) so whether hunch or data-driven 
decision seems to be a left-right brain choice.
