Ahh ... my old alumni ... the inductive charging technology is quite nifty
... the same technology is used in the brushless DC motors deployed in the
semi-conductor fab lines which need zero air contaiminents. The uni was
rather savy, they split the tech into different amp/voltage ranges and
licensed the core technology for different applications (eg high dividing
line lighting, inductive charging, etc). On the other hand, Apple buying up
the technology seems more like a strategic move to keep competitors away
from a differentiating factor (much like they acquired those titanium
covers before the iPhone launch). I have mixed feelings about this ...
there is some neat tech coming out (like superconductors, LanzaTech,
bioremediation, etc) but the good stuff tends to get cherry-picked and
moved offshore. Makes it hard to build a serious tech cluster ... I would
have thought the cross-tasman agreement would have led to more sharing of
investments, allowing Australia investment funds to get first look and punt
on the pick of the tech litter but it doesn't seem to have happened.
