My (comparatively mild) objection to this is not because it is 'profiling'
but because it greatly increases the odds of a conversational dead end.

See above - my experience in meeting people (and connecting people) across
multiple backgrounds is that people tend to clam up after reciting their
job title. Yes, not all people, but why would one deliberately use one's
time in a non-optimal way?
