I have observed at close quarters friends who host their own email (including hosting my email, and this list) and, to quote Taj, I recommend it to absolutely nobody. Email is broken, and needs 24/7 professional to work reliably in this brave new world.

Half the fun is being able to deliver mail to large email providers without being caught in their spam trap as a miniscule email service. Ironically at one point I couldn't send email to my own hosting provider because my mail server's IP resolved to a hostname called "postal" instead of "mail".
