I immediately empathised with the words that Nishant wrote....I too am totally new to the silklist and have been in the usual dilemma...I am pretty keen on meeting some of the people on the list, and yet feel a certain reluctance too. The "mere housewife" tag is something I don't believe in, but over three decades it seems to have got entrenched in my psyche and has to be winkled out now and then... I love meeting people one-on-one but meeting a group at once makes me feel as if I am under a microscope.....
This has happened to me several times in my life; getting into the quiz group that I moderate now; meeting my spouse's classmates in a bunch; even walking into a "corporate" party, where I am "Mrs.Mohan "....I have to steel myself to the task! (Though the actual meetings have always been much more pleasant than I feared,on each new occasion, there is an element of reluctance). Amazingly, this persists even though I am a very gregarious person.
I am so glad Nishant, that you say that people won't eat us up for dinner! On some occasions, when I have been with a group of very intelligent people, there was an element of intellectual snobbery which made me as uncomfortable as money, looks, or status snobbery would have done.
I too am leaving for Swamimalai on Friday night....and right now, because of a flare-up of a condition that I have, driving myself to Indira Nagar from J P Nagar is not a good idea, especially through evening traffic. So unless there is someone going along from this side of town, who is willing to take me along on Thursday, I will postpone my first meeting with those of you who are coming.( I could do a short drive and join up with someone, too...I can drive for about 15-20 minutes before some discomfort kicks in.) If there are any kind volunteers...let me know! I live near the alleged flyover on Bannerghatta Road.
I am fairly sure that once I meet some of this group, a good comfort level will quickly be established and I will laugh at myself for the bugbear I imagined....I was worried about meeting a group of IIM-A's and their spouses who were all in "highly-qualified" jobs...but almost before I knew it, I was an intrinsic part of the group; they appreciated whatever talents and personality traits I had and I felt welcome.
And the irony is that I was not even sure if I should mention this hesitancy of mine on the list or not....that's why I am glad Nishant brought it up. Nishant...if you can make it on Thursday...I too will try and make it!
Udhay......how many on the list are residents of Bangalore?
Looking forward (sort of...!) to Thursday,if it's OK by everyone,
Deepa.
