About the feasibility of what the article was trying to say - and that's a pretty good synopsis you gave below - it's a thousand parasangs away, as Udhay also tried to say.
Possibly it mayn't happen, and there's no concrete data to believe that it's inevitable.
On the other hand, if unopposed, such slides into mediocrity - such dumbing down? - can happen oh-so-easily. Why not play safe and fight against the possibility? I don't know that it's as unlikely as a castle in the air, unfortunately.
