I used to point this out to people who asked me if there was an indicator of
India's economic development.

Growing up in the 80s I was used to seeing most poor laboring men hit the
bottle at dusk, and wake up in a gutter or bush in the morning, only to
repeat the cycle a few hours later. Even the Indian movies of that era had
this recurring theme.

Today while alcoholism in India is by no means rare the habit of drinking
oneself blind seems to have left most people.
