I would like to review any material that comes out from your
discussions.

I remember writing an op-ed piece in the Economic Times on data
privacy in India back in 2004 in the context of the (now dead)
Data Privacy Bill, and how the legislation was a perverse
interpretation of Indian society's general culture of openness,
and detrimental to the adoption of technology in India. IIRC, the
legislation mandated ISPs to share browsing data with all and
sundry. I received a memo from the managing partner of my firm
the very next day criticizing me for writing the piece, because
he was on the panel advising the policy-makers. Happily, I
received support from a techology major for writing the article
and the memo was quickly withdrawn.

Regards

Chetan

Great topic!

My one and only (slightly self-interested) recommendation is that
you also not forget the lawyers ... PbD is a big deal (or is
developing into one), and one of the hallmarks for successful
implementation is including all the diverse groups together to
develop best privacy practices and implement effective
technological steps from the ground up.

When I was at the most recent IAPP event here in D.C., there was
much buzz about PbD concepts. A great resource if you haven't
seen it yet, is available at the Office of Information & Privacy
Commissioner of Ontario's

n/

Incidentally, Dr. Cavoukian knows her stuff, and is a blast to
listen to!

  Hi All,
Before the mighty brains get distracted by the India-Pakistan
match and its aftermaths, here is a quick request for help.
One of the projects that we at the Centre for Internet and
Society are engaged in right now, is trying to conceptualise
and understand how Privacy is shaped in India, at the
intersections of law, technology and cultural practices. We
are planning to have a small open space on the 16th of April,
titled 'Privacy, by design" to look at how the technology
actors in the city understand questions of privacy online.
We are hoping to bring together coders, developers,
entrepreneurs, technology researchers and users in an Open
Space to see how we understand Privacy across a range of
internet practices like social networking systems,
e-government projects, communication and information transfer,
  surveillance, hacking etc.
We have a small list of people that we are inviting and also
making an open call (I can send the poster for that to whoever
is interested) but I was also wondering if you know people who
would be interested in such a discussion. If somebody comes to
your mind, can you please connect me with them, or give me
their contact information (with their consent, naturally) so
that I can start a conversation with them?
  Thanks a lot
  Nishant
