Yes indeed, they probably vaporise in an inert gas atmosphere, but as I say the trick is to cool the vapour fast enough so that the ions do not agglomerate into large particles. I have been experimenting with plasma gas phase deposition, which is essentially the same method using a plasma rather than a laser beam.
