Following is a discussion of loss of cell aerobic respiration, its effect
on health,  and a possible way to reinstate it. I find this fascinating. I
hope to stimulate further discussion of this: it seems to be an essential
key to health.

Dr Otto Warburg was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1931 and again in 1944 for
discovering the cause of cancer. "Cancer has only one prime cause. the
prime cause of cancer is the replacement of normal oxygen respiration of
body cells by an anaerobic cell respiration."

According to Dr Warburgh, once the level of oxygen available to a cell
drops below 40% of normal, the cell is forced to switch to an inferior
method of energy production--fermentation. The cell then loses its governor
on replication, produces inferior ATP, and wastes are lactic acid and
carbon monoxide. The acidity surrounding it can trigger t-cells to release
enzyme growth factors. Stimulated by EGF, the anaerobic cell begins to
replicate wildly. This is cancer. If a parasite is involved in the area the
acidity is greater and the cancer growth even more rapid.

Dr. Moermann of Holland was a contemporary of Dr. Warburgh and his work is
rooted in Warburg's theories, though he did his own experiments. He said
that, "decreased health gained momentum as the body adapted to a primative
form of energy production: fermentation (energy produced without oxygen,
using glucose for fuel)." He developed a diet and supplement program which
he claimed returned the cell to aerobic functioning, and which is described
in the book "Dr. Moermann's Anti-Cancer Diet", Avery Publishing Group Inc,
Garden City Park, NY. Dr. Moermann's work was so effective that "On January
10, 1987, the Ministry of Health at the Hauge--Holland's 'Food and Drug
Administration'--publicly recognized the Moermann Therapy as an effective
Cancer treatment."

   Now, interestingly, in this current time when we seem to associate
cancer with being "too acidic", Moermann claimed that his program worked by
"altering the alkaline energy supply of fermented cancer cells and
producing an abundance of oxygen-rich cells...".  He claimed that tumors
were simply visible signs that the body had adapted to fueling itself with
fermentation-producing energy. In relation to Hulda Clark's theories and
the Warburg info above, Moermann found that in rats with parasites, cancer
developed ONLY if the rats had poor nutrition and were missing certain
nutrients. 

  His diet is vegeterian but not all raw. There are eight supplements,
including Vit C and iodine. The most interesting and seeming key thing
about the progam is large amounts of lemon juice and citric acid. The first
terminal cancer patient he cured ate "oranges and lemons by the truckload". 

 One of my essential questions about this diet is...what exactly does the
lemon and citric acid do? In an email discussion with a scientist/chemist
about it, the chemist says that the diet works by causing increased acidity
within the cell which kills the cancer. Moermann does say that his diet
increases acidity, but he claims it works by increasing the oxidative
capacity of the cells. I put the question out on several lists as to what
the end pH result in the body is of ingestion of lemons and citric acid.
All responses state that although lemons and citric acid are acid on
ingestion, by the end of the Krebs cycle the result is an alkaline ash
which alkalinises the body. 

Citric acid is key to and the beginning of the Krebs energy cycle, also
known as the citric cycle, which is the step by step oxidation of glucose
into H2O and CO2. It functions as follows (thank you Bob Lee):

     Citric acid  to
     Cis-aconitic acid  to
     Isocitric acid  to
     Oxalosuccinic acid  to
     Alpha-ketoglutaric acid  to
     Succinic acid  to
     Fumaric acid  to
     Malic acid  to
     Oxaloacetic acid  to
     Pyruvic acid  to
     Citric acid.
 
I have been told that "the Kreb`s cycle explains the complex cycle of
energy production in the cell and its by products. After the Kreb`s cycle
is completed the energy has been extracted from the citric acid and it is
not acid any more." 
  
So it would seem that a key ingredient in Moermann's diet is the addition
of citric acid both directly and in food, to fuel the Kreb's cycle.
However, it would also appear that the end result of adding citric acid is
an alkaline ash which akalinizes the body. 

Now...question. What if the Krebs cycle is not able to function all the way
through, even with the addition of citric acid? As you can see from the
list of steps in the Krebs cycle, many of the stages are available as
supplements. Malic acid for instance is often helpful with Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome. Is this because there is breakdown in the Krebs cycle at that
point? And if citric acid is ingested and not broken down by going through
a complete cycle of the Krebs cycle, could it add to the acid load of the
body? And what happens to the citric acid at the end of the cycle?

Moermann's stated reason for using citric acid is that it "thins the
blood...and by doing this prevents fermentation of the cells...and
regulates the body's acid balance." I'm guessing the Krebs cycle may not
have been known when Dr. Moermann created his program.
