It's a good suggestion. I just don't know any students that have access
to what I want. They would probably be in medical school, or in follow
up training as a Naturopath. We don't have any of those schools close
by, and I don't know any Med students. I did find this though..And I'm
still winnowing..

I also found a not too old FDA report on Usnea, January, 2005. PDF
Format.
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=27&url=http%3A%2F%2Fntp.niehs.nih.gov%2Fntp%2Fhtdocs%2FChem_Background%2FExSumPdf%2FUsnicAcid.pdf&ei=XhItSqfIIISJtgf7h6y7CA&usg=AFQjCNFW_gWIUBSQo9hBfMxMbFM-I-hd6A&sig2=g9LdLoqkUi0rI4SoWY1cSA
and they admit in that report that it kills a lot of different
organisms, especially the ones that are antibiotic resistant. It seems
as though Usnea was being looked at closely before modern antibiotics
hit the scene and then it just dropped off the radar. Like CS. I just
don't trust the FDA that much because of the intermingling of folks
between the Pharma companies, researchers, doctors, FDA employees, and
ex employees. Any agency that could keep Stevia off the market due to
ridiculous reasons, but allow Aspartame to be used in the USA, is
suspect in my book. But the report did reference some studies I'm going
to see if I can track down online.
There were some reports of liver toxicity in 20 or so people, reminds me
of the Kava scare, but there is no real clarification as to why. From
what I gather it was mostly women using a weight loss product with a
pure form of Usnea extract(Usnic acid by itself) in its ingredients.
There is no proof that it was the Usnic Acid, or maybe the combination
of Usnic acid with those specific ingredients( I'll have to look up the
ingredients list) that caused the problem. Also, nothing is said about
what dosages these women took to achieve a toxic level. Very imprecise
if you ask me, for an official report. There are also other studies
referenced in the same report that seem to imply that it takes a large
amount, not huge, of Usnea to create toxicity. And that it may be a
combination of time and dose. I also think it may be the fact that
these weight loss supplements were using pure Usnic Acid, so they got
way too much, and for too long, or is so often the case, they simply
disregarded the dosage suggestions on the label and did their own thing.
But I think to be on the safe side I would pair it with milk thistle,
and other liver protective herbs. I also think Usnea is not something to
use every day. I'd use it for infections, and then only for a week,
maybe two, at most. Take some time off, a week or so, and then take
another short course if needed.

As far as all those journal articles you want to get to, find a college
student. Most colleges give their students access to at least some of the
journals. You'd have to find someone who trusts you with their login and
password, but I think that wouldn't be too hard!
Just a suggestion...

Subject: CS>Herbs and Cytokine storms..
I've been doing some research on antiviral/antibacterial herbs that
don't trigger cytokine storms.. It's hard trying to find the exact way
they work, by the types of research that has been conducted. Sigh. And I
can't afford all the flippin' subscriptions to all those journals.
Anyone have a few to suggest yet?
Most of the usual suspects like Echinacea, Elderberry, and Golden Seal
seem to make cytokine storms more probable.
I've been looking closely at /Usnea/, and /Lomatium. /Arrowroot is a
little suspect on the Cytokine front.//
Here's an article about cytokine storms that is written so someone
besides a scientist can understand it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytokine_storm
On a side note: It doesn't seem as though the Swine Flu does the
Cytokine storm thing, well according to this article anyway. They don't
have enough evidence to say one way or another. I still have a lot more
to read before I can make a reasonable judgment.
