Hi Dianne, I have used 5% Lugol's solution (iodine and potassium iodide) many times while travelling in South America to quickly kill food borne pathogens. Grapefruit seed extract has also been used successfully although it took a few extra doses and a little more time with the GSE than with the Lugol's.
