Grace,
It doesn't take much to get started making your own. Just a couple of 6 inch
silver wires of. .999 purity or better. Atlasnova sells some good wire. A DC
power source. I recommend 20 to 35 volts. It can be from batteries or a wall
plug in supply. You can often get loose "wall wart" power supplies at a thrift
shop quite cheap but you may have to search for one with a high enough voltage.
And finally, some knowledge on how to use it. We can help with that. Everything
more than that are improvements that help making CS easier and more reliably.
I don't know what you can afford but there are generators fairly reasonable in
cost for a basic setup.
From what I have seen, most plans on the web are ok.

Subject: CS>CS machine help for newbie
Sent: Dec 9, 2009 7:26 AM

I am attempting to make my first CS producing machine since buying one is not
in the budget. Does anyone have clear and concise direction for the best way to
make one that they know works? I have seen so many plans online but I hate to
put money into something that is not recommended by someone. I am looking to
make a something that I can produce several gallons a month on.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks,
Grace
