This is thermal convection stirring. Warm water rises, spreads out to contact the cooler sides of the jar and sinks....torrid stir pattern [dougnut shape]
Any temperature difference will induce convection..
A desk lamp set close to one side... a vertical strip of black tape or paint and some sun.

Convection currents can be velocity increased by using a chimney if the heat source is at the bottom, just like smoke.
An inverted funnel is a chimney shape.
Also increases heat concentration and turbulence to speed up any chemical reactions....which can be a problem in itself [but usually isn't]

Mike wasn't there discussion of using a light bulb under the jar that causes some type of stirring as well? Hang in there Dick this group is awesome with a world of info that could very well save your's or one of your loved ones life,

Hi 'Disappointed' <g>, you've got one answer I know of...Mine!

I guess others will join you shortly but in the meantime, what's the concern about that yellow colour?

Everyone's going to have a their own take on colour I would assume, and I've given you my take on it.

Just a personal opinion about bubblers...I thought about those when first getting involved with this stuff, but chose not to use them. I believe bubblers have the potential to introduce contaminants from the air into the water. If the air where you reside is perfectly clear and free of dust, industrial pollution, vehicle exhaust fumes, pollens blah blah, etc etc, then no problem I spose, but on any given day I must consider they may be *some* form of contaminant present in that air which *may* affect my end product, hence I opted for a magnetic stirrer instead to minimise that possibility. I produce my EIS/CS in open top containers so there is STILL the possibility of contaminants being dragged in, but I figure I can't win em all. Pretty much all that's in my water is the stirrer bar.

Each to his/her own.
