In oil spill cleanup, they can use several different organisms to eat the oil. The first time it was tried out was with the Exxon Valdez tanker accident. Now they probably have many more of them. In fact, the first biological organism that was able to get a patent was engineered to do just that- help clean up oil spills. I believe it was a guy at Bell Labs, if my memory serves.
