Re-reading The Nature Doctor, I came across some info (p 376 of my edition) saying that back in the 1950s Dr Vogel met Black Eagle, Sioux chief, who was over 90 years old at the time. They discussed health matters, and Black Eagle taught Dr Vogel about Echinacea angustifolia and E. purpurea, which he said were equal in their effects.

BE said his ancestors used it to cure blood poisoning and even snake poison. A helper would suck the bite until it bled, spitting the product. The next step was to chew up leaves and roots, preferably done by the victim. The juice was swallowed and the chewed plant was applied to the bite and bandaged, repeated at least twice and then again on second and third day. By the fourth day, the victim would be out of danger. Same procedure for injuries, arrow poison, and cold prevention (chewing roots or leaves).

Dr Vogel grew it back in Switzerland, and used it successfully when he got blood poisoning after neglecting a scything wound. He used Black Eagle's method, and was astounded at the rapid cure.

Another time, Dr. V travelled to the Amazon, along with a colleague who was acclimatised to South America. Dr V travelled without malaria drugs, but took forty drops of Echinacea tincture morning and evening. Although they had mosquito nets, the insects got up through the chinks in the bamboo floor, and they killed some blood filled insects under the net. His colleague didn't trust the Echinacea and wouldn't take any; both were bitten some hundreds of times. The area around the Upper Maranon was notorious for malaria. His colleague returned home with a bad case of malaria, but Dr. V. did not suffer at all. Thirty years later Dr V had a medical check up which revealed that he'd had a malarial infection some time in the past. The only time this could have happened was on that Amazon trip, so he concluded that Echinacea may help prevent malaria. His company produced it as Echinaforce.

Anybody any stories about Black Eagle? He was in Dakota at the time Dr V met him.
