Sandy, You don't need both bases. The magnetic stirrer is the best one. I've had both, and still using the magnetic one.
If you are going to use wide mouth jars, he also sells a little ring that fits over the top or if you have the right tools you can cut a hole in a CD/DVD that will do the same thing. If you can afford it the silvergen gives you other options you don't get with the puppy. I keep hoping.
