The first question we need answered is if you're using salt or baking
soda to "kick-start" the reaction. I don't know what kind of recipe
the silver solutions folks recommend.

If yes, then you'll get a slightly milky colored stuff that's about
as good as you'll get from that process. It likely has larger
particles than the no-salt recipes, but continues to be effective for
those who use it. The technique has fallen into general disfavor.

If, however, you're using only distilled water, or perhaps a bit of a
previous batch to speed things up, then the likely answer to your
question is you've stirred it so vigorously that the gray "fluff"
that usually forms on the negative electrode has gotten mixed in with
the CS and clouds things up.

The right procedure is to gently pull the electrodes out of the CS,
trying not to shake loose the "fluff", then wiping them clean,
stirring the mix, then putting them back in. Do this every once in a
while.

Strangely, the coffee filter idea is not as great as we used to think
it is, in that you've got to make certain that your filters are not
introducing a lot of dissolved contaminants. Folks have tested for
dissolved solids after supposedly filtering, only to find that many
ppm of soluble stuff came from the paper.

So it's best to try to keep the stuff out of the CS in the first
place.

Amen to that! However, the simplest recipe is not that difficult once
you get a little experience with it. It does not generate a precise
product, but with a little care it will be effective.

Others will have things to add. Don't worry that you're doing
something major wrong. You're doing okay.

Be well,

Mike D.
