Dear Katie and Marsha, I started off using 3 batteries, but found that 2 worked better. If you use your multi-meter to measure the mA, start from 0 and work up to 10, we found that the build up of sludge was minimal. Not enough to bother cleaning. But remember to stir really frequently. I didn't have to filter the last batch it was so clean.
Some say use 1x9v battery, I may try this.
