Actually formaldehyde is emitted by a number of plastics upon polymerization. Polyurethane is one of the primary ones if I remember right. Anyway, not only carpet but foam fill insulation for houses will also emit this compound. It can actually be quite a health hazard if houses are made reasonably air tight.
