Bill Briggs was quoted as saying:
"[concerning]...CS and the dangers of renal failure.
Said it might take as long as 20 years or more, but it
would happen."
I am not impressed by anyone's qualifications, or
letters by their name, nor am I unimpressed by a lack
of them. Academic accomplishment nowadays has little
or nothing to do with one's knowledge about a subject.
I even find that it can interfere with clear,
objective thinking.
Anytime someone makes flat statements like that ("it
WILL happen"), I want to know where he got the
information, how he can demonstrate the validity of
his statement, and why I should believe him. He may
very well be right, but his authoritatively-spoken
word is not enough. I especially have trouble with the
idea that he is sure that it will happen years down
the road. The only way to come to that kind of
conclusion is either to have watched it happen for 20
years (as has been done in the case of tobacco), or by
logical deduction. Although I am not much impressed by
the accuracy of logical deduction when it comes to the
human metabolism, I am willing to hear the reasoning
that convinced him.
At this point, Bill Briggs' statements occupy a level
of credibility in my own mind on par with Andrew
Weil's, which isn't much.
But I would be interested in seeing his reasoning.
