Robb- I suffered with bursitis in my late teens, and finally went to a doctor and was told nothing could be done but to take cortisone or have surgery, and to take aspirin for the pain. Later I read in Adelle Davis' "Let's Have Healthy Children" that you can't absorb calcium from milk without fat, and I was drinking only one serving per day of powdered non-fat milk. I switched to regular milk, 4 servings or more per day, and my bursitis pain went away! Later I wanted to lower my fat consumption and switched to 2%, and started taking mineral supplements. Off and on I have had bursitis pain return, but taking chelated minerals with trace minerals (particularly boron, molybdenum, manganese, copper, zinc, selenium) has improved that and lower back pain. I also started taking colloidal minerals 7 years ago at a time I was experiencing bursitis pain in my shoulders, continually fighting lower back pain, getting muscle tears in my arms when pulling on something heavy with only a finger or two, and waking at night with excrutiating pain between my shoulder blades, which I since read was a symptom of fibromyalgia. All of the above pain slowly went away on the colloidal minerals (I get mine cheaply from http://www.azurefarm.com , a food co-op on the west coast). I also have had some symptoms of arthritis- De Hebredens (sp) nodes started to develope on some terminal finger joints, and I would have some knee pain going up stairs or dancing. I recently started some arthritis herb capsules- alfalfa, burdock, devil's claw, yarrow, wild yam, prickly ash bark, yucca, buckthorn, slippery elm, parsley, cayenne. I have also been trying to drink apple cider vinegar at least once a day, and take my mineral capsules with every meal. The latest bout of knee pain has ceased.
When I started developing the de Hebredens nodes, I read a book in the library suggesting taking Vit B5- Pantothenic acid, Vit B6, and possibly niacin for them, and have been taking the first 2 (50-100 mg/day) as well as a 50 formula Multi-B capsule, for several years without seeing more development of the nodes. I also tried taking niacin at night for quite a while. The flushing from niacin is actually related to the presence of histamines in the body. As I understand it, histamines are commonly formed as a result of eating foods that one is allergic to. I read a book using this effect to determine allergies. Since fasting relieves your arthritis symptoms, and there is a theory that arthritis can be caused by food allergy, I would suggest fasting then adding food back one at a time to discover which foods give you symptoms. Niacin is used to detect food allergy, if I remember correctly, by taking it right before eating then seeing if the food gives a flush, or right after eating??? When I was taking it I did experience a period of time I was apparently not eating any allergens and was flush-free, but then I had a period of time with a lot of flushing and was tired of the discomfort and not wanting to give up eating the walnuts I believed were causing it, so I quit taking niacin. Another easy way to determine food allergens is the pulse test. You take your pulse first thing in the morning, then eat a single unmixed food. Wait 30 minutes then take your pulse again, while resting and make sure it has stabilized and is no longer decreasing if you were walking around. If your pulse has elevated over the first reading, like from 72 to 80, then it indicates a food allergy. I once had hay fever and other allergies suddenly appear caused by hypersensitivity of my immune system to allergens because I was eating foods I was allergic to on a daily basis. I discovered what foods were bothering me with the pulse test and discontinued them, and also learned that the mucco-polysaccharides in tripe (beef stomach) could relieve hay fever symptoms such as runny nose, itching eyes, and sore throat, so I cooked some and ate it on a daily basis. In 2-3 weeks all symptoms were gone. Tripe is best cooked with ginger Chinese-style and only until tender enough to chew, in my experience. Over-cooking causes it to become slimy. I am just starting to take colloidal silver, so I am excited to see what difference it will make. The problem I am looking to solve is persistent nail fungus.
