It doesn't stand for anything.  An arc is an electrical discharge, such
as a welder uses, or lightning, or even the spark in a spark plug.
Basically gold cannot be removed electrolytically like silver, it must
be evaporated (from intense heat from the arc), or sputtered, which
means gold atoms are knocked off of the electrode by high energy
electrons hitting the electrode in an arc.
