When I first read that article, I visited a biochemist friend involved in drug research. He outlined the metabolytes of aspertame from memory. Many of the metabolytes are common in our environment..various hydrocarbons etc. [my memory is not as good as his even though he took a lot more drugs when we were kids] He was not alarmed by them but did say, basically, that caution and moderation was a good thing... for just about all things. [Yea, he's one to talk] I see in further examination of the articles and follow up that methonal toxicity is considered to be the main problem. Did you know that one of the metabolytes of booze is methonol? [ If i recall, another is formaldehyde] Some people metabolize ethonol into methonol at greater rates and in higher ratios [to sugars] than others. Given the difference in a normal 'dose' of nutrasweet and the amounts of booze that many people drink, just what IS a toxic dose of methonal? You can smell it strong on the morning after a good drunk. Does a teaspoon or two of aspertame make you smell like that?
Does aspertame "contain" methonal? I doubt it. Methonal is a liquid and neutrasweet is a powder. Methonal cannot be made into a powder. If I recall, acetylene was one of the metabolytes mentioned by my friend and he said it goes straight to the liver...like ethonol [booze]. Possibly it can metabolize into methonal there. Just because something will kill ants does not mean it's an ant poison. It kills ants because ants can't tell the difference between sugar and nutrasweet and they get no nutrition. Eating nothing but Wonderbread will kill you too. Here's a good one "Aspartame is not a diet product. On the last page of the NSDA protest you will see that aspartame is a drug that makes you crave carbohydrates so you gain weight. No wonder there is so much obesity in this country. " It would be more logical to assume that people use nutrasweet because they crave sweets [carbohydrates], not the other way around and they are obese because they eat them... though the effect 'could' be 'made' to look like the cause. I constantly see obese people eat 3 Big macs and drink a diet coke [to wash it all down]. That doesn't make sense...nor does eating 3 Big Macs. But that doesn't mean that a diet coke made them eat the burgers. I suspect it's a guilt reducing device and a way to hide ones own responsibility for getting so fat. "See? I drink diet soda and I'm still fat...I'm a victimmmm!" [Go figger] ...and Coke has lots of money to sue them for... Well , maybe aspertame is a factor in the diseases mentioned, but I doubt it's the only one. It's entirely possible that discontinuing use could aleviate symptoms just by removing one source of the toxins so the critical levels are no longer reached. Humm, lots of hydrocarbons in the air during the gulf war? Gasoline burns MY tongue too...for quite a while. How many of the stricken ones drink vodka..or certain French wines sweetened with polyglycol [antifreeze] or have liver problems? I'm no fan of the FDA, But it's typical to give an official cold shoulder to reactionary public outcry from just a few individuals. I'm sure they get all sorts of crank stuff that forces everyone else to 'go through channels'. Many people use their answering machines to screen out telemarketers. Now, if they want to talk to me, they have to come 'here'..and face my shotgun. Same sorta thing. Still, aspertame, a good thing to stay away from. Besides, it tastes like crap. But the point is, how much of this info is a distortion of the whole truth, while the intent is clearly 'to scare'? ken At 10:51 AM 8/2/02 -0700, you wrote: >Ken writes (of >http://www.XpeditionsMagazine.com/magazine/articles/kathy/asp.html ): > > >> ...like any reactionary piece designed to manipulate your emotions... >> >Good eye, Ken!
