Normally no harm will occur from just READING an
e-mail - but never open an Attachment sent by
someone you don't know - that is where most virii
come from, not the e-mail itself.

If you did "infect" it a whole range of things can
happen, all the way from cute notes popping up
to the loss of programs, or the total loss of everything
on your hard drive.

Well if you have a Pee Cee and no operating virus
protection it is just a matter of time before you get
got.   Even MAC owners should have something
running that is current. I update Virex monthly.

virus protection software on the market, - how
long do you think they would remain in business?

I'll bet that you downloaded  a piece of  Freeware
you happened to find.
