Hi Joe, I have used 18 and 14 ga. The 18 ga. tends to vibrate at 60 Hz because it is more flexible so you need to reduce the diameter of the hole in the end of the glass tubes to hold the wire steady while it's arcing. I got the 18 ga. from www.ccsilver.com
I am using Ole Bob's original setup now which uses 14 or 12 ga (not sure) and is much more stable in the arc because of the stiffness of the wire. We made a trade and I use it because he did a much better job of machining than I could. I'm using a 7.5 KV/60 ma. NST and it's a bit difficult to keep the arc going unless I keep the arc spacing just right. A 12 or 15 KV NST would work much better.
