ANI[ THURSDAY, MAY 06, 2004 08:09:15 PM ] SYDNEY: Dr Stephen Shumack, a dermatologist, has revealed that a skin cream named Aldara designed to treat genital warts is killing skin cancers so successfully that there is rarely any need for surgery. Shumack said that Aldara, which is sold as a treatment for genital warts, causes about 90 per cent of most non-melanoma skin cancers to disappear within six weeks. "It's able to trigger the innate immune response by targeting receptors that respond to danger," Shumack told surgeons at an international conference in Melbourne. "They release types of body chemicals that trigger the selective destruction of abnormal cells, so we're really taking advantage of what is a normal immune reaction," he said. In four studies conducted in Australia, New Zealand and America, Aldara was applied to non-melanoma skin cancers once a day for six to 12 weeks. After six weeks' treatment, 88 per cent had been completely cured. "The percentage was the same after 12 weeks so we concluded that six weeks' treatment is enough," The Daily Telegraph quoted Shumack as saying. "More importantly, there was no later recurrence of the cancers because the treatment had been effective on a deep as well as a superficial level. At 150 dollars for 12 sachets it's significantly cheaper than surgical excision," explained Shumack. Shumack, however, cautioned that surgery is still needed for some patients and doctors should take a sample of cells to confirm that the cancer had disappeared after treatment. ------------------------ Yahoo!
