Morning John,

I have seen many problems caused and corrected by the difference in
"Coefficient of Expansion" of different materials.
The hard drive is a relatively simple mechanical device with few moving
parts. The parts are precision and work with very small
clearances. Temperature changes will of course alter these clearances
which will place the device back into operating tolerances.
In some cases of failure, the circuit board and/or electrical components
would be the cause of failure. These respond to temperature changes as well.
Mechanical stress to a hard drive, other than temperature changes can in
fact cause it to operate.
This can be a DROP of 4 to 6 feet or a directed blow from another object.
I was working late one night bringing up network, after installing all new
cables in an office complex.
The business was being relocated. One particular computer was failing to
boot.
I called one or two of my upline consultants for wisdom beyond that which I
possessed. Believe me, I have some of the best in the area. He went into
a lot of theory about the problem at hand.
After this conversation, I went to my truck and retrieved my largest
screwdriver. I removed the drive from its mounting and made one blow as
hard as I could to the drive.
One the next attempt, the drive booted up and worked for an extended period
thereafter. The same thing principle of the drop, but not as spooky.
There is really nothing new under the sun.
Commercial Computer company for years, I thought nothing could throw me
and that I'd heard it all. The question is: WHO woulda ever thought of
doing THAT? :-)
Thinking people that explore all avenues of logic. ( You knew that )
THEN how did it propagate???
Do you mean "how knowledge travels" ?
We tell the complete truth to our friends but leave out small details
when talking to our enemies.
That sounds like politicians, does it not?
You never thought "redneck technicians" would learn this art. This
was reserved for the elite, the rich, and the famous.
I better stop because you are leading me into deeper analysis than
intended.
By the way, when I was designing and manufacturing medical products, I
solved problems relating to different expansion rates by making both the
manifolds and valves of the same material.
I had a comment about all those high tech and highly qualified
engineers, but I will save that until later.
Possibly, in your studies, you have come across the era in time whereas
the student studied for 25 or 30 years. When he graduated, he knew all
the science available to man at the time.
I used to give people logic tests. No amount of study or learning will
create a mind that can excel at logical reasoning. People have it, ... or
they don't.
