As with any form of self-treatment, Debbie, you should be as informed as you can be. That's why I trouble to mention any risk that is foreseeable. In this case, it means reminding you of the chance of allergic reactions and the Herxheimer reaction. For somebody who has a known sensitivity to silver, or who has *never* take CS before, it would be wise to start off with an extremely small dose, an insignificant amount like a few drops or a fraction of a teaspoon, and then wait a few hours. This would minimize your risk of suffering a severe reaction if you happened to be highly allergic to it. A worthy precaution, just in case. We've had one report here a long time ago that *might* have been an allergic reaction of this sort, though the circumstances were ambiguous. A little caution is cheap insurance. That's one way somebody *might* go into shock. Very low probability. If you've already tried CS without harm, then it's not at all likely. The second issue is the Jarisch-Herxheimer effect, which was first noted many years ago when treating syphilis patients with then-new antibiotics. The good doctors Jarisch and Herxheimer discovered that they were killing some of their patients when the drugs wiped out so many bacteria so quickly that it sent them into shock and overwhelmed their livers with the toxic load of metabolites and cell wastes that were dumped into their bloodstreams all at once. Being that CS can sometimes be *very* effective at killing little beasties, naturally you need to be aware of this as well. The answer is to start with small-ish doses (spoonfuls certainly qualify, if you're CS is 10ppm) and gradually ramp up the quantity and frequency until you note an effect. That effect will either be a worsening of symptoms in a Herxheimer reaction, or else an improvement in symptoms as the infection begins to recede. A mild Herx is no worse than some flu-like symptoms: headache, muscle aches, fatigue, nausea. Severe Herx, of course, can include shock. Avoided by being aware and reasonable in your approach. Many have taken CS safely without even a Herx. Many others have used the Herx as proof that the treatment is working. For some of those, the "Herx from hell" is a badge of hope! So listen to your body. Watch the symptoms for change. Modulate the dose up or down to keep any discomfort manageable. With those things in mind, CS is quite safe for most of us most of the time. I hope that puts your mind at ease? Mike D.
