Yes It is usually caused by a contaminated container. Saliva will sometimes turn stored CS purple [lilac] in a few days. Just the smallest trace is enough. It often goes that color in the doggies bowl after a while. Other un-namable contaminants can do it too.
I've seen reddish, purple, all shades of yellow and amber, brown and black, from murky thick looking to barely tinted, but not green yet.
