Some groups are forbidden to use buttons as they were used on military uniforms. In the 1600's when Anabaptists were being persecuted in Europe they were being harassed and abused by nobles and military officers wearing brass buttons on their clothing. The Anabaptists are nonviolent and a symbol of their peaceful defiance was not to ever wear button.
